Having read nearly all of Anna Quinlen's books I was surprised to find out this was her first novel. All of her work has phrasing that stands out and makes her work a joy to read. In addition to being a master storyteller her characters are developed throughout the whole novel which is one reason they hold my interest from beginning to end.

If you have read any of her books you will most likely find this one as good as any of her other works. She is a superb writer!

I have loved several books by this writer. This wasn't one of her best. The ideas were solid, but the story itself meandered more than I enjoyed. And the plot seemed very "normal", although the parts about the differences between the Italians and Catholics were interesting - something you don't read much about any more. After I finished it, I read that it was her first novel. That explains it. She definitely got better over time.

I have always loved Anna Quindlen's style and getting back into visiting the library, it was astonishing to learn how prolific she has become. Her fiction writing is the best.

I usually love Anna Quindlen's writing, but I just couldn't get excited about this one.

The development of the individuals, the families and the friendships kept me turning pages in order to see where the author would go. Quindlen has a marvelous style. I have yet to read one of her books that did not grab my interest immediately and keep it through the last page.

I loved this coming of age novel. The characters are beautifully drawn and engaging. The themes balance inseparable but opposite truths. The events described in the story develop and act as metaphors for the themes. A lot of poetry in prose form.

I've read 4 of Quindlend's books - liked them all but this is the best!
Not my favorite book of hers
