I read the entire series when it came out and I have now, in the last few months, reread The Bastard and The Rebels. I don't remember a thing from the first reading, so this is like reading for the first time. My eyes have been glued to the adventures of Phillip Kent and Judson Fletcher on my kindle. The Revolutionary War is a time that is of interest with the colorful historical figures. I have several ancestors who fought and this gives me a real good insight into what their lives may have been like and what their worries about home through the lives of Phillip Kent and his friends and allies in the book. And we get to glimpse into life with George Washington, George Rogers Clark, Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Ben Franklin and others who are in the book as well. Super read.
While this is the second book of a series it can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel. In fact, this is the first book that I`ve read in this series and I found it very interesting and had no problem following the story without having read the prior novel. While the story follows Phillip Kent as part of the Kent Family Chronicles, it also covers other characters that eventually tie into the Kent family. If you enjoy historical fiction with great character development and a strong plot then you owe it to yourself to read this book.
Hidden Winter
Good reading, I am enjoying the series. American History has always intrigued me and Mr. Jakes relates historical events very well and accurately. I do question his approach to human behavior, however. His characters seem to be either weak and/or constantly angry. Taken with a smile and a grain of salt, his books are enjoyable and I can recommend them, especially for the History Buff, as worth reading.
I had read some of the Jakes' series before, but don't remember reading this one. I was especially enthralled at the beginning with the Battle of Bunker Hill (which was actually at Breed's Hill) because there is reference to General Joseph Warren who died in that battle.
My mother was a Warren and it was my middle name. So that was my ancestry.
What terrible times they all went through.
It makes us proud of our history.
I enjoyed the first book about Philip, "The Bastard" and this prompted my purchase of the second. It is historical in many ways but built around a fictional character. I was disappointed as I began to read the first few pages of this book, but am now fully entrenched in this next edition of the lives involved. Very well written and a great way to escape the antics of our current times while discovering somethings are the same just a different century.
I have been enraptured since childhood by the North and South movies. When I read the books I was a bit horrified at the less than happy ending I had expected. However, John Jakes is a brilliant writer and he does his homework! I enjoy the actual historical aspects but I found the lead character a bit dull and unlikeable. If you love historical fiction and don't care about a wonderful love story woven in, then give this book a try.
Excellently written with excellent characters, plots and sub plots. The author, once again, weaves a totally believable story with attention to historical accuracy. I very much look forward to the next book in this fantastic series.
I read these books when they first came out in the 1970's I always wanted to re-read them but couldn't find all the books. I was happy to be able to purchase for my Kindle. If you like American History type stories this is the one for you. Just enough actual history and fiction. It is a GREAT read. Thank you for putting this in the Kindle library
