Hypoglycemia: The Other Sugar Disease by Anita Flegg,Ron Rosedale

How to deal with low blood sugar.
This book is a great source if you're looking to learn about hypoglycemia. The author writes from her own experience, and shares some experience from other hypoglycemics. Her overview of the disease and its symptoms is easy to read, and doesn't overload on medical jargon. The book includes a discussion of how hypoglycemia is diagnosed, and gives tips about how to talk with your doctor or health care professional about it. Tips are also included about diet, including some review of often suggested diets for hypoglycemia. Tips are also included in some detail about possibly helpful supplements. The author advocates eliminating sugar from the diet completely, and following a complex carbohydrate & protein based diet. I thought the book was very informative, but found myself wishing for more detail about the diet - specifically regarding those foods that fit the suggested parameters. A helpful read nonetheless.
I am newly diagnosed with hypoglycemia. I have had symptoms for some time now but it was always passed off as stress and anxiety. I am awaiting an appointment with a nutritionist but as you know, sometimes you have to wait a whole month before seeing someone. So in the meantime, I have found myself fumbling for information on what to eat and do. I bought this book. First one I have read about hypoglycemia. I have been very pleased. This book is very encouraging (I can see myself rereading to boost diet motivation when necessary) and offers lots of information. This book made me feel less overwhelmed with the disease and have given insights on how to live with it by changing my diet. I have also ordered the Krimmel Handbook but that has not come in yet. If I like that one, I am planning to order the cookbook.
This comprehensive, well researched book is a must for anyone suffering with low blood sugar. Unlike some of the other books on the topic, the author does not prescribe a particular diet. Instead, Anita acknowledges that different diets work for different folks; in particular, hypos often have to experiment with their carbohydrate level to find out what works best for them.

Anita presents interviews with a number of people who are hypo, gives a clear and intelligent description of the condition, and has a very impressive bibliography section.

Hypoglycemia is a prevalent but treatable problem. This book is a very useful tool that will help people to understand and stablize their blood sugar.
I have suffered from headaches, dizziness and shortness of breath for over 20 years. I was eating a lot of sweets and fruit to stop the dizzy spells. After reading Anita's book I was able to track my symptoms directly to my eating habits. I have changed the way I eat and have felt great for months. The few times I eat poorly (i.e. too much sugar) I have a headache within 30 minutes. This book has helped me understand the direct link between the foods I eat and the way I feel. Instead of using sweets to feel better, I make sure I include protein in every meal. Thank you for the information to be able to articulate to friends and family why I now refuse the high sugar treats they offer.
After struggling with Hypoglycemia for 2 years, I found that there was little information available on the subject and every book or article that I read, pointed to a specific diet. After reading Anita's book, I found that listening to my body and reacting to its needs, was exactly what I needed. Hypoglycemina affects people in many different ways and there isn't one diet that works for all.

Anita has certainly done a lot of research on the subject and it was an easy read with lots of useful information.

I would highly recommend it to anyone suffering from Hypoglycemia.

I also enjoy Anita's weekly Hypo tips via email.
After reading Anita's book,I made sure that I had protein for breakfast every morning. One day, I had my usual bagel with peanut butter and yogurt, after which, I attended my morning Public Relations Committee meeting, related to my Volunteer work. The meeting went longer than I anticipated and I did not have a lot of time, from the time my meeting ended and the start of my Secretarial position for a Radiology company I worked for. So I decided to purchase a muffin because I was hungry. By mid-afternoon,I knew I wouldn't last through my evening Journalism class, as a result, I had a brownie. Big mistake. When I got to my evening class, I was so tired, my concentration level was found wanting. Thanks to the information Anita provided in her book,I knew it was because my blood sugar level had dropped. Because I knew the reason behind my fatigue, it enabled me to combat the problem by purchasing some nuts and thereby alleviating my tiredness. For these reasons, I higly recommend this book.
I purchased 'Hypoglycemia: The Other Sugar Disease' for my 20 year old daughter. She is in college and was diagnosed with hypoglycemia in December, 2004. This book has been a tremendous help ~ especially since she lives in a dorm and healthy food is not always available in the college dining room. Thanks to Anita my daughter is now aware of food she should eat and is able to deal with college food. Thanks Anita ~ great job!
This book makes sense of the causes and symptoms of hypoglycemia. Throughout the book Anita shows how fluctuating blood sugars can be controlled to improve health and well-being beyond one's hope. Thank you Anita.
