Alfred's Teach Yourself Guitar Repair & Maintenance: Everything You Need to Know to Start Working on Your Guitar! (Book & DVD (Hard Case)) by John Carruthers

John Carruthers, legendary guitar builder and repair guru to the stars, has teamed up with Alfred to produce this ultimate beginner's guide to guitar repair and maintenance. Comprehensive, step-by-step instructions and close-up shots clarify how to set the action for ultimate playability, adjust for bulletproof intonation, and keep any guitar in top condition for a lifetime. This book & DVD also includes steps on setting up and adjusting Floyd Rose tremolo systems, soldering and maintaining electronics, the proper way to remove and install strings on both standard guitars and Floyd Rose systems, and exact specs for the action, nut action, and truss rod adjustments of electric guitars, acoustics, and 4- and 5-string basses. 80 pages.

Although I respect Carruthers, this book is just terrible. I highly recommend either of Erlewine's books over this volume, which seems intended to confuse beginners and in some cases contains very bad advice (using X-acto knives to deepen unwound string slots, but nut files for the wound? Why not get a complete set of nut files?) and shys away from essential information (explaining neck relief but essentially, and superstitiously, asking the reader to leave adjustment to the professionals.) It also dwells on Floyd Rose setup but spends relatively little time on more essential topics.

Between YouTube videos, forums, and the Erlewine volumes, there is no reason to purchase this book to learn the basics of guitar repair. Better to spend your money on beater guitars and tools and figure it out using the aforementioned resources. This book, with its lack of meaningful photos, examples, or humor, will only frustrate.

This is good for basic knowledge. But Its not great for tricks or anything. He only deals with a Floyd Rose bridge. The tools you need cannot be found in music stores(they don't want you to do it yourself.) The precision rulers are also not sold in Home Depot, Lowes, or H.F. Why guitar people use 64ths instead of 16ths is beyond me. It makes no sense.

Great help on setting up and tweaking the sound from my many guitars

I purchased this book after looking at a video on utube, the teacher did seem to have a simple approach to the setup of a fender strat guitar, the book was easy to understand so glad I made the purchase, thank you.

It is an essential book if you want to learn how to fix and setup your guitar. This book it is more oriented to electric guitar than bass guitar.

This book help me but it didn't have enough of the measurement that I needed in it. Pictures were good but they were a little blurry. Didn't have enough info just on bass.
